A copy of this book was sent to me unsolicited by the publisher I’ve aiata wanting to read Akata Witch ever since I seen it on Tumblr a few months ago. From the Hardcover edition. Miss Tate left her standing as she went to her desk in front of the class.

The title reflects some of these conflicts. Informizely customer feedback surveys. But overall, I enjoyed reading it and would recommend if the synopsis piked your interest. Then a monster tries to drag her into a lake and this is only the beginning of her troubles. She hadn’t meant the essay to be funny at all.

I love that Okorafor knows that her characters are young adults, and that they speak, argue, enter relationships, and handle situations like genuine young adults.

The candle just flickered like any other flame. Maybe it was because they needed to catch their breath or maybe they truly were curious, but they all paused. Brushing that aside, the setting is deeply fascinating to me, with magics very tied to the place and culture, with masks and masquerades and local spirits and demons and angels. It felt a little too convenient and everything just worked out so well. Furthermore, she paints the landscape strong.

There are some of the typical elements that you’d expect of this genre, but there are also so many new things to discover.

Nnedi Okorafor is a Nigerian American author of African-based science fiction, fantasy and magical realism for both children and adults and a professor at the University at Buffalo, New York. What age of child would you recommend this book to? Rowling’s first Harry Potter book and in terms of the plot that doesn’t seem so far off the mark. If I remember correctly, both also begin with first-person sequences in which the protagonist gets a hint of her own power, and then segue into third-person for the remainder of the book.

I spent the weekend with a great book: My candle was white and thick, like the ones in church. Orlu and Chichi have been working with their teacher for years. For a fantasy set in Nigeria, involving not only magic but violent serial murders, this book was remarkably dull.
