There were a few philosophers for whom I only had a passing acquaintance before reading this book, a few who were only names and footnotes to me. Including material on recent debates, A Short History of Modern Philosophy is already established as the classic introduction. In detail, I particularly liked the parts on K A good overview of a wide range of modern philosophers. While I was aware of many of these philosophers, the book provided many threads between them and how they developed, dis- and reappeared. So studying these people, and philosophy, being philosophy, led me to other past philosophers May scrkton, Ryan Linkous rated it liked it.

It includes new chapters covering Lacan, Deleuze and Badiou and some timely thoughts about the historians and social thinkers who led British intellectuals up the rogee path during the last decades, including Eric Hobsbawm and Ralph Miliband.

I also very much appreciated his chapters on both Kant and Hegel, which I thought were lucidly written. In he published two books, The Disappeared and later in the autumn, Fools Frauds and Firebrands. Fillsofia book manages to summarize some of the most difficult material in philosophy without sacrificing too many important details and distinctions.

With these philosophers, the writing got a lot more interesting, and from there on it only got better. But the book’s brevity, felicity of prose and connectedness of ideas helped me get through even the thorniest parts. There’s also a smart advisory section on which books to read per philosopher to gain a better understanding of filosofis views, in fact, I think I should read more on Descartes.
