The narrator of Marks of Identity, Alvaro, reflects on the roots of his identity and on the Spanish Civil War that shaped his life. I was enjoying it and reached the half way point when I was heading south for a vacation. On several similar occasions Alvaro is reminded of his life up to that point, and many memories have connections to the political climate in Spain during the most riotous years preceding and following the Spanish Civil War and the Francoist State.

Strangely these two books have something in common. Such an anti-intellectual exercise! The story is said to have many autobiographical elements. Goytisolo makes sure the real and the personal comes out, as well as the political and the tragic, with moments you can relate to debates on foreign cusine as an emmigrant and focusses on the realities of daily life for those living without a country.
